Each State designates specific agencies to receive and investigate reports of suspected
child abuse and neglect. Typically, this responsibility is carried out by child protective services (CPS) within a Department of Social Services, Department of Human Resources, or Division of Family and Children Services. In some States, police departments may also receive reports of child abuse or neglect.

Child Welfare Information Gateway provides extensive information regarding child abuse prevention, intervention, reporting and more. Child Welfare Information Gateway promotes the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and families by connecting child welfare, adoption and related professionals as well as concerned citizens to timely, essential information.
Childhelp is a national organization that provides crisis assistance and other counseling and referral services. The Childhelp® National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-4-A-CHILD) is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with professional crisis counselors who have access to a database of 55,000 emergency, social service, and support resources.
