DEPELCHIN CHILDREN’S CENTER PHYSICIAN RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE

Alice Mao, M.D.DePelchin Children’s Center is proud to acknowledge that Alice Mao, M.D., Associate Medical Director at DePelchin Children's Center and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Baylor College of Medicine, has received the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty of the Year Award from the Baylor College of Medicine, Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Services.

Dr. Mao’s presence, in concert with DePelchin’s range of mental health services, has certainly contributed to DePelchin’s reputation as a preeminent teaching site for young doctors in the field of child psychiatry.

The esteemed award is granted by residents to a faculty member who exhibits excellence in teaching and mentorship, demonstrating the qualities that they themselves would like to emulate when they become practicing physicians.

The Faculty of the Year Award is only the latest affirmation that Dr. Mao is an exceptional teacher and an incredible asset to the mental health services team at DePelchin. In years past, she has received multiple awards including the Nancy Roeske Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching, the Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching 2005, and the Clinical Teaching and Mentorship Award 2003-2004. Most recently, Dr. Mao was named the recipient of the 2008 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty Teaching Award from the Baylor College of Medicine.

Not only is she an excellent teacher but she also is recognized as a leading expert in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry on integrating biological, psychological and social interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders and novel psychopharmacological interventions for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.  From 1999 to 2003, she wrote a weekly column on psychopharmacology and mental health issues for the Houston Chronicle. She is a Councilor at large for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent  Psychiatry and serves on multiple committees. Dr. Mao has published many articles to advance her field, including most recently, Review of Laws to Help Parents Raising a Child With Autism, which was published in AACAP News.

DePelchin Children’s Center is privileged to have Dr. Mao on staff and to help train the next generation of children’s mental health experts. Currently, DePelchin has two psychiatry residents from Baylor College of Medicine on a six month rotation as well as six psychology interns supervised by Dr. Lou Anne Mock.  According to Dr. Mao, “DePelchin, as a teaching facility, offers children and their families the highest quality of care from the very best in their fields.”
