Military Family Fun Days DePelchin Children’s Center’s “Military Family Fun Days” (MFFD) is a group-format, participatory family-resiliency program offered free of charge to military families. Topics such as communication styles, identification and expression of feelings, teamwork, planning, and personal strengths are presented and reinforced in a fun, low-stress environment. The model has been used successfully on various military installations and in a non-profit community mental health setting. The program can be administered in one day or over the course of two days. Improving the Quality of Life for Military Families MFFD provides both immediate and long-term benefits. In the short term, it provides a day or weekend for families to have fun together free of charge (meals, materials, and activities are included). Longer-term, the skills taught and learned can aid in pre-deployment preparation as well as post-deployment reintegration. Initial ratings from a pilot program at DePelchin indicated that military-connected caregivers believe the model will be helpful for adults and children alike. The Need Military service affects the entire family. While children benefit from the positive aspects of military life and typically share their parents’ pride, they also share in the stress that often accompanies service. DePelchin has long been dedicated to transitional care for military families. MFFD, supported in part by a grant from the National Children’s Traumatic Stress Network, is designed to attract and serve families who have difficulty acknowledging service-related or typical family stresses. The Curriculum The Active Military Families (AMF) program is the therapeutic element of MFFD. Developed by Kelly Simpson, M.A., L.M.F.T., of the Active Relationships Center in collaboration with Megan Mooney, Ph.D. and Adrienne Tinder, Ph.D. of DePelchin, AMF teaches and/or reinforces skills for families to use at home to enhance relationships and resiliency in their daily lives. |
